A Bridge to Tomorrow: The Story of Mariama

Mariama had always been a bright student. From a young age, she dreamed of becoming an engineer, not just for herself, but for her community in Monrovia. Her teachers at the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) saw her potential clearly: a curious mind, a relentless work ethic, and a passion for learning that refused to fade, even in the face of hardship.

But dreams, no matter how strong, often clash with reality. Mariama came from a family with limited means. As tuition fees rose and daily expenses piled up, she began to wonder if her dream would ever become reality.

Just when it seemed her journey might be cut short, a door opened.

The African Methodist Episcopal University Alumni Association in the United States of America (AMEUAA-USA), with tireless support from its PA, NY, & NJ Chapters, had launched a scholarship initiative to help students like Mariama; those with the will to succeed but without the means to continue.

Through fundraising events, community outreach, and the generous hearts of alumni who once walked the same halls as Mariama, the AMEUAA-USA made it possible for the university to award scholarships to 25 students. Mariama was one of them.

The scholarship didn’t just cover tuition; it restored hope. With her financial burden lifted, Mariama returned to her studies with renewed energy and confidence. She became a leader among her peers, mentoring younger students and organizing study groups. In her final year, she proudly presented a capstone project on renewable energy solutions for rural Liberia.

Today, Mariama is a graduate of AMEU, on her way to a career that will help power homes, schools, and dream, just like hers once was.

Thanks to the commitment of AMEUAA-USA and its regional chapters, 25 futures were rewritten. And for Mariama, the scholarship wasn’t just financial aid. It was a bridge to tomorrow.
